Hi there.
To say the last few weeks have left me shattered is an understatement.
After working in media in 2016 I knew that violence, context collapsing and the metamorphosis of extreme ideologies into mainstream acceptance was our new norm. But it all happened so quickly. Again. After we said we learned.
I wish I could say I am surprised. I am not. It’s easy to forget that extremists are everywhere. Times of crisis and violence emboldens them. Hardliners further normalize far ends of a spectrum. All of a sudden, the views we would have called fanatical become vanilla. Sprinkle in echo-chambers that, to remain lucrative, serve you the content you want to see, not what’s balanced or accurate, and bada-bing-bada-boom… you start saying things you’d have condemned last year.
Nuance, context and trying to learn, not prove a point, is the only thing protecting my mind at the moment. Maybe yours as well.
So, All Left Turns. An unpacking. A place where it’s less about being wrong or right but exploring the grey. A positive spiral if you will. Instead of a deluge of negativity leading to thought paralysis and despair, maybe we can build a staircase up with nuance, dialogue and a whole lot of empathy.
Still working on what this thing will look like, this about page is a good start.
Some examples of posts you can expect; an embarrassingly long deep dive into snail mucin, why retinol isn’t always that girl and short stories that changed my world view. I also will be sharing *a lot* of podcasts as I consider it auditory therapy.
For now, all posts will be free. Would mean a lot (if you want to be here) to subscribe. To comment I am putting a paywall. I’m learning how this platform works so, all aforementioned things are subject to change. I’m excited to take time for more nuance and not 10-60s soundbites.
